David Starr Upbeat Despite Bad Luck in Opener
Daytona Beach, FL – February 23, 2013. David Star’s return to SS Green Light Racing fell far short of expectations on Friday evening at the Daytona International Speedway, but the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series veteran came away upbeat and excited about the remainder of the 2013 season.
Thursday’s practice ended with a bang for the Texas native as the No 81 BYF/Chasco Constructors Toyota cut a right front tire during a mock qualifying run midway through the final practice session. The tire exploded sending Starr hard into the turn three-wall and destroyed the team’s primary speedway Tundra that had been carefully massaged over the winter for the season’s opening race.
“We signed this deal just a week before the Daytona so the team did not have much time to build a back-up Tundra for this race. There was a huge emphasis put on the primary truck,” said Starr. “I saw the determination on the team that Bobby (Dotter) and Bryan (Berry) assembled for this race the minute they unloaded the back-up truck and worked until NASCAR made them leave the garage to be ready for Friday.”
“Everyone did a great job just to get the back-up out on the track for qualifying,” David added. “Thursday night it was questionable if we were even going to be able to race on Friday and the guys accomplished the near impossible getting the back-up ready.”
The SS Green Light team came through and David was able to qualify on Friday afternoon and started the Nextera Energy Resources 250 from the 33rd starting position. He and teammate Chris Cockrum hung back through the early stages of the race hoping to avoid any large wrecks that might occur. Just past the halfway point of the 100-lap race a mechanical failure in the suspension sidelined Starr’s Toyota and he was credited with 31st finishing position.
“In my mind, if the outcome of the race was determined by effort, we won the race because the guys did a great job just to get us on the track. Daytona is a place we all love and want a good finish but there is no way that I’m disappointed. It was an incredible effort.”
“We’ve got over a month to get ready for the next race and if the effort of this team is anything like it was at Daytona we should have a great Toyota for Martinsville.”
"Hopefully we got a season’s full of bad luck out of the way in one weekend and we can move on from here. I want to give a shout out to my teammate Chris Cockrum in the No. 07. He did a great job and scored his first career top-fifteen finish, that was really a great run.”
“I want to thank Build Your Future and Chasco Constructors for their support and the extra help we received from Steely Lumber Company Inc., Striping Technology LP, Niece Equipment LP and Engine Parts Plus. We wouldn’t be able to go racing without good partners and I can’t tell them how much we appreciate them.”
